Dr Eileen Culloty from EDMO Ireland was a speaker at the Irish Council for Civil Liberties’ 50th anniversary conference, held in partnership with Trinity College Dublin’s Law School, on a panel examining the challenges ahead for democracy and civil liberties.
The panel, “The Challenges Ahead for Democracy and Civil Liberties”, was chaired by Dr Róisín Costello BL, Trinity College Dublin School of Law and Director of the Jean Monnet Centre for Excellence ‘DEMCONEX’.
Dr Culloty was joined by Dr Johnny Ryan (Senior Fellow, ICCL Enforce) and Dr Illan rua Wall (University of Galway) for a discussion on the intersection of technology, fundamental rights, and democratic resilience.
The conference featured a keynote interview with former President Dr Mary McAleese and marked the launch of ICCL’s new strategy, “Fighting for Democracy: Safeguarding our Freedoms and Rights”. The strategy responds to a pivotal moment in which fundamental rights and freedoms, online and off, are being dismantled as state power and corporate interests find common cause with a well‑funded and coordinated anti‑rights agenda.
