Dr Eileen Culloty of EDMO Ireland delivered a presentation this week to Oide’s Digital Technology Advisory Network (DTAN), addressing the challenges of disinformation and media literacy in today’s complex digital environment. Oide, funded by the Department of Education, supports teachers and school leaders in integrating technology into education through its Technology in Education programme.

Speaking to the advisory group guiding the implementation of the Digital Strategy for Schools to 2027, Dr Culloty explored key issues including how to define disinformation, the limitations of the term when addressing young people’s real media experiences, and the growing influence of artificial intelligence. She emphasised the importance of critical thinking over narrow definitions and outlined how schools can move beyond reactive fact-checking to equip students as engaged, discerning learners.

Dr Culloty also highlighted practical classroom resources — including TheJournal.ie’s Knowledge Bank — that support media literacy, prebunking, and critical engagement with online content.
