The European Commission Vice-President for Values and Transparency, Věra Jourová, invited representatives from EDMO Ireland and DCU’s FuJo Institute for a meeting to discuss EDMO’s actions to combat disinformation in Ireland as well as the proposed European Media Freedom Act and the Strengthened Code of Practice on Disinformation.

The Vice-President and her team met with representatives from EDMO Ireland including the Disinformation Lead (Kirsty Park), Media Literacy Coordinator (Ricardo Castellini da Silva), Managing Editor at Journal Media (Susan Daly) and Chief Product Officer at Newswhip (Dervilla Mullan) as well as FuJo Director Jane Suiter and FuJo member Roddy Flynn who is the Irish partner in the EU Media Pluralism Monitor Project.

Vice-President Jourová’s portfolio includes countering disinformation, freedom of the press and media pluralism, and identifying risks to plurality in the media sector. Throughout the meeting the team described the process involved in fact-checking and monitoring disinformation as part of the hub, future media literacy projects in the planning stages, and FuJo’s experiences in monitoring the Code of Practice and in compiling the Media Pluralism Monitor for Ireland.

Funded by the European Union, EDMO Ireland is coordinated by FuJo at DCU and brings together The University of Sheffield’s NLP Group, Newswhip and The Journal FactCheck to collaborate on countering disinformation, promoting media literacy, and supporting quality journalism.
