{"id":714,"date":"2024-10-25T12:11:22","date_gmt":"2024-10-25T12:11:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/edmohub.ie\/?p=714"},"modified":"2024-12-05T20:35:21","modified_gmt":"2024-12-05T20:35:21","slug":"edmo-launches-guidelines-for-effective-media-literacy-initiatives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/edmohub.ie\/index.php\/edmo-launches-guidelines-for-effective-media-literacy-initiatives\/","title":{"rendered":"EDMO launches Guidelines for Effective Media Literacy Initiatives"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>EDMO has responded to the pressing need for <a href=\"https:\/\/edmo.eu\/areas-of-activities\/media-literacy\/raising-standards\/#1704900985728-6f41d8bf-c5b7\">guidelines on how to design, develop, and implement effective media literacy initiatives.<\/a> While there is great demand for media literacy and an explosion of media literacy projects, it\u2019s critically important to ensure these efforts are effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The EDMO guidelines have been designed for use by anyone involved in the development of media literacy initiatives \u2013 civil society, educators, policy makers, those in the media or tech industries. The guidelines are in the form of a checklist, which is intended to be helpful in raising issues for consideration, based on the experiences of prior media literacy initiatives. Guidelines are grouped into three sections, which mirror the successive stages of developing a media literacy initiative: development,&nbsp;delivery&nbsp;and review.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Development<\/strong><br>A good media literacy initiative:<br>\uf0b7 has clearly defined goals and principles<br>\uf0b7 is empowering<br>\uf0b7 promotes critical understanding of the media ecosystem<br>\uf0b7 consultative and relevant<br>\uf0b7 takes an evidence-based approach<br>\uf0b7 is inclusive<br>\uf0b7 is ethical and accessible<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Delivery<\/strong><br>A good media literacy initiative:<br>\uf0b7 is transparent<br>\uf0b7 is prepared<br>\uf0b7 is adaptable<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Review<\/strong><br>A good media literacy initiative:<br>\uf0b7 endures<br>\uf0b7 reflects, shares and evaluates<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an area as complex and diverse as media literacy, there can be no one-size-fits-all approach. Media literacy initiatives \u2013 such as training courses, published lesson plans or other resources, online games, or campaigns \u2013 vary considerably in scope, size, duration and focus. As a result, not all of these guidelines will be relevant to all projects. It is entirely up to the user to select the most appropriate advice for their initiative.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Commenting on the guidelines, EDMO Ireland coordinator Dr Eileen Culloty said: &#8220;As demand for media literacy has never been higher, these guidelines are an invaluable resource to help organisations develop and evaluate their initiatives.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The EDMO Working Group&nbsp;on Media Literacy &#8211; which includes Martina Chapman from EDMO Ireland and MLI &#8211; &nbsp;sought input from the EDMO Hubs and other practitioners to develop the guidelines. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>EDMO has responded to the pressing need for guidelines on how to design, develop, and implement effective media literacy initiatives.
