The clip uses a manipulated BBC report featuring newsreader Sally Bundock to push the conspiracy theory. The flight, designated FZ1703, was forced to make an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia after the captain was stabbed by his copilot. There were 174 passengers on board.

Debunked: Despite claims online, burning turf has a significant carbon footprint

Published: 5 October – by Shane Raymond

Facebook posts promoting turf burning claim that peat is not a fossil fuel and has a negligible carbon footprint. Most authorities, including Geological Survey Ireland, Eurostat, and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, classify peat as a fossil fuel because it forms from ancient organic remains over thousands of years. Burning turf produces a significant carbon footprint that is higher than the rates for coal, oil, and diesel. A study using 2006 data showed that for turf burnt in Ireland, 102.2 tonnes of CO2 were released for every Terajoule of energy created.

FactCheck: Three claims from opposition TDs who criticised this year’s budget

Published: 6 October – by Shane Raymond

Opposition politicians criticised various budget measures, including Aontú leader Peadar Tóibín claiming the government broke a promise to delete carbon tax on home heating oil. The government never made that pledge, though it did announce that the carbon tax rate would drop from €63.50 to €48.50 per tonne of CO2. People Before Profit TD Paul Murphy also hit out at a tax exemption for rented granny flats, claiming landlords do not have to pay any taxes on them at all. Under the rules, tax relief applies only up to a threshold of €16,000 annually.

Which of today’s budget measures were just a repeat of previous announcements?

Published: 6 October – by Stephen McDermott

Budget day brought several spending and tax announcements that had already been revealed well in advance. Similarly, the €3.5 billion investment in the ESB and Eirgrid was previously outlined in July when the government unveiled details of the revised National Development Plan.

Through the European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO), the EU supports a European network of factcheckers, including TheJournal in Ireland.
