It purported to show presenter Sharon N\u00ed Bheol\u00e1in announcing that presidential candidate Catherine Connolly had withdrawn from the race, followed by AI-generated footage of Connolly herself appearing to confirm the false announcement. The fabricated broadcast then cut to fake clips of RT\u00c9 Political Correspondent Paul Cunningham, who appeared to claim that the election had been cancelled and that Heather Humphreys would become president by default.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The video originated from a Facebook account called \u201cRT\u00c9 News AI\u201d. The video has been removed by Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. Aidan O\u2019Brien noted that this particular deepfake was notably more sophisticated in its attention to detail than other examples he has seen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The emergence of the fake broadcast follows a wider wave of AI-generated political disinformation circulating throughout the election period, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thejournal.ie\/factcheck-ai-generated-videos-and-images-irish-presidential-race-atas-2025-catherine-connolly-heather-humphreys-6850517-Oct2025\/\">as reported by <em>TheJournal<\/em> FactCheck <\/a>and other outlets.
